A urine test, also known as a urinalysis, is a diagnostic examination where your veterinarian takes a urine sample to gather information about your pet’s health. It's a non-invasive way to gain insights into your pet's overall health.

How does a urine test work?
A urine test is a comprehensive diagnostic procedure that involves collecting and examining urine samples to assess your pet’s health condition. When you visit our clinic with your pet, our healthcare team will collect your pet's urine sample.
As part of the initial inspection, the veterinarian will conduct a visual examination to assess the colour and clarity of your pet’s urine. Then, the sample undergoes physical testing to determine specific gravity which evaluates the concentration of particles in the urine and the kidneys' ability to concentrate urine properly.
The veterinarian may also conduct a chemical analysis using reagent strips to test for pH, protein, glucose, ketones, blood, bilirubin, urobilinogen, and other compounds. These strips change colour based on the presence of specific substances. A microscopic examination of a small portion of the urine sample allows for the observation of cells, crystals, bacteria, and other microscopic elements.
The results are then interpreted alongside your pet’s medical history and symptoms, which help identify and diagnose common health issues, such as urinary tract infections, kidney disease, diabetes, etc. Depending on the urine test findings, further tests or treatments may be recommended to confirm a diagnosis or address existing health concerns.

What conditions can a urine test diagnose?
A urine test is a diagnostic tool that helps identify and assess various health conditions. The information obtained from a urine test helps veterinarians determine appropriate treatment plans for your pets. Urine tests can be beneficial in diagnosing and managing the following health conditions:
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): a urine test can help detect bacteria and white blood cells to diagnose a UTI, which can then be treated with antibiotics.
Kidney disorders: if a urine sample of your pet indicates abnormal levels of protein, blood, or specific gravity in the urine, it may signal kidney problems.
Diabetes: elevated glucose levels in the urine may suggest diabetes or other metabolic disorders, which is beneficial for appropriately managing the disorder.

However, while a urine test helps diagnose these conditions, treatment plans are determined based on a detailed assessment of your pet’s health, symptoms, and other diagnostic tests as needed.
How is urine collected?
There are 3 main methods in which the veterinarian can collect urine from your pet.
Free-catch method is when the veterinarian gently presses on your pet’s bladder to get it to urinate, alternatively, you may also submit a urine sample which you collected from your pet.
A urinary catheter can be placed into your pet to collect urine from its bladder. Some animals may need sedation for this method.
The third method of collection is by using a sterile needle which passes through the abdominal wall into a full bladder. This is the best method of collection as the sample collected is sterile and hence the results obtained are most accurare compared to the first two methods.
Once collected, our experienced veterinarian analyses the sample and assesses various parameters to diagnose your pet's condition.
When the results are ready, your veterinarian will discuss the findings and inform you about your pet's health. If any issues are identified, the vet will recommend an appropriate course of action and ensure your pet receives the best care possible at Dr Paws Vet Care.
How many urine tests are needed?
The number of urine tests for your pet depends on the severity of their health conditions. In many cases, a single urine test is enough to diagnose the underlying health issue in your pet.
If a urinary tract infection is detected, the veterinarian may prescribe antibiotics and follow-up urine tests to ensure the infection has cleared. For chronic conditions like kidney disease or diabetes, the veterinarian may conduct regular monitoring through periodic urine tests to manage the condition. The treatment plan and the frequency of follow-up urine tests depend on your pet's health needs.
