If you are planning to move to another country and bring your pet with you, there are certain requirements to fulfil. Every country has its own set of rules to follow when bringing a pet there for the first time. You must research what is required before packing your bags with your pet in tow. It can take up to six or seven months to plan and prepare for exporting your pet to another country. As a pet owner, it may seem overwhelming, but don’t fret; we are experienced in pre-export health checks and certification and can guide you accordingly.
Before you start making travel plans, be sure to check with the veterinary or agriculture department of the intended country on the exact required vaccinations and tests that your pet needs. Some countries require import permits as well. You will typically have to submit these certifications for approval before flying. On top of these health checks and certifications, your pet will normally need to be quarantined for 10-14 days, depending on the country. Also, remember that not all breeds are eligible for export, even if they undergo the required vaccinations and tests. Several countries have restrictions on breeds for both cats and dogs.
There are also certain regulations to follow for bringing your pet outside Singapore. These include obtaining an export license from the National Parks Board (NParks) ) Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS). This export license is only valid for 30 days, so you must plan accordingly.

Although the exact list differs from country to country, these are the common vaccinations your pet will need. In some countries, they will need to undergo the RNATT (rabies neutralising antibody titre test) after receiving the rabies vaccination. Keep in mind that additional vaccinations and tests may be needed.

Depending on the country you are moving to, pre-export health checks and certifications may include certain vaccinations and laboratory tests your pet has yet to do. In some cases, you may also need to submit a veterinary health certificate as part of the regulations before bringing your pet into the country. This certification states that your pet is healthy and disease-free at the time of inspection. Therefore, your vet will examine your pet to ensure no issues. However, this certification is often only valid for a certain period of time, such as seven days, so you’ll need to plan accordingly.
Some countries are stricter than others and require more certifications and/or health checks for importing a pet. For example, Australia requires an import permit and only allows pets from approved countries. Additionally, cats and dogs that are entering countries like Australia for the first time must be microchipped. Quarantine, health checks, and vaccination requirements change from time to time, so always be sure to check the latest guidance for the country you’re planning to move to.
Although pre-export health checks and certifications are often a requirement and may not treat specific conditions, they can also provide you with peace of mind. Certain vaccinations your pet has not previously had can keep them safe from potential diseases they are at a higher risk of contracting in a new country. Laboratory tests can also show certain issues you weren’t aware your pet had before. A veterinary health certificate also puts your mind at ease by ensuring your pet is healthy and fit to travel.
After undergoing the necessary procedures for pre-export health checks and certifications, you can expect to receive the required certifications and tests that will help your pet gain approval to be exported to another country. It is one of many steps to export your pet to another country.
Another tricky aspect of pet vaccinations for export purposes is the timeline. You’ll need to schedule or time the vaccinations accordingly to meet the requirements for pre-export. Therefore, you may need to bring your pet to the vet for multiple sessions to meet the vaccination schedule, perform laboratory tests and checks, or implant a microchip.
